VA AID AND ATTENDANCE BENEFITS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers the Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit to assist veterans and their surviving spouses who require help with daily living activities. This benefit provides additional financial support to those already receiving a VA pension.
Eligibility Criteria:
1. Military Service:
- The veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a recognized wartime period.
- The veteran must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
2. Medical Necessity:
- The applicant requires assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, or protection from daily environmental hazards.
- The applicant is bedridden due to a disability.
- The applicant is a patient in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity.
- The applicant has corrected visual acuity of 5/200 or less in both eyes or a visual field contraction to 5 degrees or less.
3. Financial Criteria:
- The applicant's income and net worth must fall within limits set by the VA, considering factors like unreimbursed medical expenses.
Application Process:
1. Gather Necessary Documentation:
- Military discharge papers (e.g., DD-214).
- Medical records indicating the need for aid and attendance.
- Financial documents detailing income and assets.
2. Complete Required Forms:
- VA Form 21-2680: Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance.
- If applicable, VA Form 21-0779: Request for Nursing Home Information in Connection with Claim for Aid and Attendance.
3. Submit the Application:
- Mail the completed forms and supporting documents to the appropriate VA Pension Management Center (PMC) serving your state. Addresses for the PMCs can be found on the VA's official website.
- Alternatively, apply in person at a VA regional office or with the assistance of a Veterans Service Officer (VSO).
Processing Time:
The VA processes claims in the order they are received. Processing times can vary, typically ranging from three to six months. However, applications may be expedited for individuals over 90 years old or those in hospice care.
