HEALTH - Carers who look after parents and children suffer decline in health

Caring for ageing parents and children at the same time takes a ‘significant’ toll on health, a study has found.

Being a ‘sandwich carer’ with both older and younger dependents causes a decline in mental and physical well- being, according to research by University College London.

An estimated 1.3million people in the UK juggle the responsibilities of caring for older relatives while raising children under 16 years old, with numbers rising as people live longer.

Researchers analysed the health of 2,000 sandwich carers and 2,000 other adults from the UK Household Longitudinal Study between 2009 and 2020.

YOUR MARRIAGE

Is this marriage for love — or money? ‘I always recommend a prenup.
Remarriages fail more often than first marriages. While close to half of first marriages in the U.S. end in divorce, 67% of second marriages — and 74% of third marriages — fail. This puts investment advisers in a dicey position when clients announce that they’re getting remarried.

Advisers may worry that their besotted client is making a mistake, especially if they suspect the new spouse prioritizes the client’s money over love. But should they say so?

“It’s hard to overcome a client’s enamored passion,” said Lili Vasileff, a certified financial planner in Greenwich, Conn. “Time might prove you right [that the marriage was a mistake], but by that time you’re long fired.”

FINANCE AND INVESTING TIPS FOR THE SANDWICH GENERATION

Managing finances for the Sandwich Generation

About a quarter of Americans are part of the sandwich generation, a group of adults who are financially supporting their children while also helping their aging parents with finances and health issues. Men and women are equally stepping into this role, usually while in their 30s and 40s, according to a 2023 New York Life survey.

Though caregiving can be a positive experience, nearly half of those survey respondents say it has impacted their personal finances. Many report contributing less (or nothing) to their retirement and emergency savings, taking on more debt, or cutting back on expenses while juggling care for their parents and kids.

But undermining your own financial security can lead to more problems, said Cameron Huddleston, a journalist and author of “Mom and Dad, We Need to Talk,” a book that helps adults communicate with their aging parents about finances.

YOUR KIDS

Benefits of forming a strong bond with your kids

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – It’s Parenting Connection Tuesday and 6 News is here for you with tips, strategies, and helpful reminders from child development experts on how we can be better parents and guardians.

Today’s topic: Benefits of forming a strong bond with your kids

Over the next few weeks, we’ll discuss things learned from a group of Michigan State University students, studying child development. The first deals with a form of attachment theory, involving bonds that parents must create and form early on in a child’s life.

Pendo Galukande, a spartan doctoral student in MSU’s human development and family studies department says these invisible bonds that connect families – are the biggest protective factor a parent and their children can have. Galukande says a strong parental connection helps a child when they face bullying, developmental or learning difficulties, or even when they are exposed to distressing issues they hear about or see on television.

“If we feel closely connected with another person, that protects us from whatever difficulty or harshness
